I’ve always been a stickler when it comes to grammar and spelling and I proofread everything. Even when out and about, I just can’t help it. I set myself little challenges to see how many errors I can find. On signs, billboards, leaflets and brochures – there are howlers everywhere!
Recently, I had a little look online to see what other people had found, and I have to say the results were hilarious, if not a little disheartening for a grammar geek like me! My particular favourite is the warning to go slowly in the ‘accident porn’ area…
In addition, online I have occasionally been asked if I’m sure I ‘want to exist’ Hmm, that’s a tricky one!
My list of big grammar peeves includes the misuse of apostrophes and the non-use of commas (I know, I’m so cool). I understand lots of people don’t share this with me; many don’t see the importance of these little marks. However, they are important, essential in fact. Just look at the difference they make in the sentence below:
Let’s eat grandma! (Whoa!)
Let’s eat, grandma. (Oh ok, that’s fine)
See? Commas save lives! Use them.
My other favourites include the big sign saying ‘SHCOOL’ I saw displayed on a side of a road (proving education is key), the ‘Executive Bored Room’ sign on a meeting room door (I’m sure that’s great for business!), and the ‘All prosecutors will be toad’ warning message displaying outside a private car park (the car park can turn you into an amphibian?). As you can see, a small typo makes a huge difference!
