The Perils of being a Copywriter

I love my job. I count myself very lucky to be one of the few people who get to do something they love for a living. But when part of your job involves checking for spelling errors, typos and grammar gaffs, it can be hard to leave your work behind.

For example, I go out for dinner and find myself proofreading the menu. And woe betide anyone who’s with me if I find a mistake. They have to put up with me pointing it out to them, telling them how it should have been written, and then sometimes, even taking a photo of it. An actual photo. I know. I’m a massive loser but I just can’t help it!

Part of my job as a Copywriter is writing straplines for marketing and ad campaigns. This is actually really good fun and something I love doing. Apart from when I find myself watching adverts on TV and saying (out loud!) “That strapline doesn’t work!” or “I would have written this instead.”

I know, I am a loser.

The other peril is the sheer and very real fear of making a public spelling mistake. Any time I spell something wrong on a social media post, I panic so much that someone will see before I can edit it, I break my neck trying to alter it. It’s actually very daft! But surely, as someone whose job it is to point out and correct spelling mistakes, I’m 100% not allowed to make any myself, right? And if I do, I HAVE to amend them really, really fast so nobody knows it ever happened.

So yes, I love my job and I am good at it in my humble opinion. But sometimes it would be nice just to read the menu purely to decide what to order.
